Exercise and Atrial Fibrillation!

Frequent irregular heart beat is called Atrial Fibrillation. Median age for people suffering from Atrial Fibrillation is 66.8 years for men and 74.6 years for women, according to Dr. Shephal Doshi, MD, director, cardiac electrophysiology and pacing at Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California USA. Obesity or over weight is one of the factors of Atrial Fibrillation. Weight loss can help to reduce the effect of this disease.

Exercise Regularly

People can control their heart beating with exercising. People, in this case should consult their physician or cardiologist. They might ask to take several cardio tests before suggesting the right exercise regime. People should avoid high intensity exercises as a beginner. They should start with short duration while doing workouts. They can also wear heart rate monitor during exercise so that they can stop when needed. If the heart rate is too low or too high- people will face the symptoms like shortening of breath etc. People can ask their cardiologist for the safe limit to push themselves accordingly.

People should keep themselves hydrated during exercise. People should cool off if they feel any symptoms like dizziness. Weight training is not recommended for people who suffer atrial fibrillation. Don’t forget to take a proper warm up and cool down session for the workout! Dress up properly before opting for any workout chore! Wear helmet and safety belts before indulging in any physical activity like bicycling. Interval exercises can be good for people suffering from atrial fibrillation. It is because it gives a small break for people to recover and push again during exercise.

Control Diet

Diet alone cannot help you get rid of atrial fibrillation but it contributes to your health condition. The first step is to control your caloric intake! Cut back on salt! Too much salt is not good for your medical condition. Eat more unsaturated fat like fish. Opt for options like grilled, boiled, steamed and baked. Avoid processed food. Limit your dairy and meat consumption. Try to eat more fruit and veggies most of the time. Take whole wheat for breakfast! Avoid white carbs or processed food like pasta. Prefer oatmeal and kasha! Go for lean protein in a grilled and steamed option. Go easy on caffeine! Drink more water and herbal tea.

These are few guidelines for people suffering from Atrial Fibrillation. Do not forget to take your medicine and go for a regular check up!
